Here’s the thing about complaining as a working white American woman…. it’s kind of dumb. Lately, when I catch myself complaining, I try to verbalize the complaint out loud (especially when it’s just me) all the way through. For example.

This traffic sucks. I hate my commute. This is effing ridiculous.
I hate driving IN THE CAR I OWN that WORKS and which runs on the gas that I CAN AFFORD TO BUY back and forth from a JOB I LOVE in an economy in which there are people who would give their left foot for a consistent paycheck. And I want to get home faster because I have an AMAZING PARTNER there waiting for me WHO LOVES ME just as I am and can always make me laugh. He is waiting for me in CHICAGO where we live in OUR AMAZING little tree house APARTMENT with it’s SKYLIGHTS and DISHWASHER and cozy bedroom and GRANITE COUNTERTOPS and he will probably have DINNER WAITING or at least ALMOST READY. 

By the end of my complaint, I usually realize that I should probably just shut it on up and be grateful. Because what do I even have to complain about?

Yeah…. I can’t think of anything either.

i will never believe they are fraternal twins! i will also probably always love them a little bit and i will blame it on the timing of my childhood if anyone ever challenges me on it.

I got cast in this indie film, Scary Normal, this morning! The trailer is sooo cute, and the purpose (see below) is important. In the fall of 2004, writer/director Jennifer Bechtel was inspired by a gay-straight alliance from a nearby high school to start thinking about why there are few (if any) movies with strong gay characters in them that are not rated R. It seemed to Jennifer that, just at the age when young people begin to explore these questions of self-identity (frequently late pre-teen, early teens), they were blocked from most media that would reflect their experiences and concerns on the big screen. A powerful connection to the gay community and a concern for the many recent tragedies in the lives of GLBTQ youth across the country led Jennifer to start working on two new screenplays…

[Scary Normal] is a family coming-of-age comedy about Chelsea, a teenager who just wants to be seen as normal. However, with the strange lifestyle that her family lives as her stepdad completes his indie horror movie projects, she spends much of her time frustrated and embarrassed by her family. Then, along comes Danielle, a sometimes brash, almost always self-confident young lesbian who has been kicked out of her own family because of her sexuality. Through their friendship, Chelsea starts to realize the true value of friends and family who love unconditionally.
